A simple solution for hiding bulb foliage

By: Garden Gate staff
Wondering what to do now that your bulbs are done blooming? Here’s an easy way to hide ugly bulb foliage until it’s ready to be cleaned up.

Yellowing daffodil foliage can be ugly, but cutting it off steals energy from next year’s blooms. Roberta Cerniglia of New York uses wire hangers to help her garden look better while she's letting the bulb foliage ripen. Using metal snips, she cut the corners of the hanger on both sides to make two metal u-shapes.

After her spring bulbs, such as daffodils (Narcissus spp. and hybrids), bloomed, she used the arched wire to secure the foliage to the ground. This way the yellowing leaves could more easily be hidden while they gathered energy for next year’s blooms.
