Determining problems with your drainage is essential when it comes to preventing long-term issues. It helps save you money, time, and effort as well. It also stops the problem before it worsens.

One of the most common issues or problems that many homeowners have to face but rarely notice is water damage. If you don’t fix the issue right away, you are going to have to expect severe damages to your home, which can cost a lot of money. You would have to face repairs, and it can even put you and your family at risk of a lot of infections or respiratory health issues too. Water in your home can come from various areas. But can you tell where the water can be draining from your home? What can you do to fix the problems? Below are some of the most common places where you can find water draining in your around your home:

Your Gutters

Your gutters are the number one spot where water should be draining around your home. It catches rainwater and diverts it away. It is important to make sure that your gutters are free from any type of blockage so that water can be diverted properly away from your home. If you see leaves blocking the debris, or if you see that your gutters are overflowing, then you might need to have them checked. If you see paint peeling off from your walls, or if you see dirt on the outer parts of your gutters, then these are also sure signs that you need to have them checked as well. Most commonly, leaves might be clogging the downspout of your gutters and you only need to get rid of them.

Your Downspouts

The downspouts that are found below your gutters are also among the items that responsible for draining water around your house. When rain falls, make sure that you check how it dumps the water. Too much water can dump close to your house’s foundation, which can potentially go through your basement. This can ruin your furnishings, flooring, and all the others that can be found in your basement. To make sure that water drains off properly, you can try adding in some gutter extensions or call in a professional to have your home’s foundation checked.

Taking Care of Your Drainage And Installing Proper Ones

Install A French Drain

You can also install a French drain system to make sure that water doesn’t pool up in your yard, and also in order to divert water away from your home. What you can do is to dig a trench around your home’s foundation, and install a drain that will pull the water away. Cover it with gravel and then soil, and make sure that the trench slopes downward so that the water is flowing away from your home’s foundation.

Install An Exterior Drain

If you have a basement, make sure you install a drainage system in it as well. This can be a footer drain or a tile that will drain away excess water from your home.
