Grilling is a popular outdoor activity that can be done during the summer, in winter, or probably anytime during any season. 1. Grill Outside and Far Away From Your Home
While it is a common precaution o grill outside of your home, some homeowners may forget to set up their grill far from it. When grilling, especially if you are using a charcoal or gas grill, make sure that you place your grill far from your home, preferably at least ten feet away. This is to prevent any fire from starting near your home. Keeping it far away in an open space will make sure that other areas of your home don’t easily catch fire.
2. Clean Your Grill Regularly
It is also important to clean your grill regularly. As you use it, grease, fat, and other oils can build up. This type of buildup can be the cause of fire or flare-ups. Make sure you clean the grill trail as well. If you have a charcoal grill, wait for the coals to cool before throwing them away.
3. Watch Out For Leaks
It is also essential for you to check if there are any gas leaks before using your grill. To do this, you can apply some soap and water solution to the hose of your gas tank. After that, turn on the gas. If the solution bubbles, then this is a sign of propane leak. If you smell gas, this can also signal a leak as well.
4. Keep Your Water or Fire Extinguisher Close
Keep your fire extinguisher or spray bottle of water close while grilling. You won’t know when you’ll suddenly have a minor flare-up and it is better to be prepared. Make sure you know how to use a fire extinguisher. If you don’t know how to use one, then call your local firefighter right away instead of trying to figure it out. A lot of people also get harmed trying to use a fire extinguisher when they have no idea how to operate it.
5. Don’t Leave Your Grill Unattended
While you aren’t watching, your grill can suddenly cause a fire without you noticing. It is important that you put it out right away. Also, avoid putting in too much food in your grill, because too much oil or fat caught by the flames can also start a fire.
6. Don’t Turn On Your Grill While It Is Closed
Another important safety tip is not to turn on the gas of your grill while it is still closed. This is because gas will accumulate inside, and when you actually light it up, fire may explode. Also, make sure that you set up your grill on a stable surface. This is so that your grill won’t suddenly topple over and cause items in your garden or patio to catch fire.
