  • HOW TO MAKE GOOD FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS

Flowers can brighten up any room, no matter where you place them. It’s like our brains are naturally inclined to enjoy the sight of flowers, and they can turn even the dullest of offices and lobbies into something a little livelier and more cheerful. Flowers can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but what really makes them interesting in an indoor setting is when you arrange them in certain patterns and shapes.

Floral arrangement is something that can range from being a simple hobby to a full-blown profession depending on who you ask. It’s not only a great way to pass the time but also turns your living space into a more therapeutic environment. Here’s what you need to know about arranging your flowers at home.

HOW TO MAKE GOOD FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS

Complementing versus contrasting

One concept that you’ll quickly learn when getting into floral arrangements is the idea of complementing and contrasting. It’s a concept that’s common throughout all forms of art and media, and while it can be a bit difficult to grasp in other art forms, floral arrangements make it pretty straightforward. Essentially, you can make a floral arrangement look good by either complementing the colors or contrasting them.

Complementing means placing similar colors and shapes together. The similarities make the entire bunch appear as a cohesive whole, making different flowers appear similar and as if they’re part of a single group or shape. Placing similarly colored flowers can evoke this feeling. On the other hand, contrasting refers to putting different colors and shapes together. This evokes a different emotion, as while the flowers don’t look like they match, they both stand out individually as a result.

Because complementing and contrasting can be quite a deep concept to explore, it’s best to simply follow your gut feeling when arranging. Knowing the concepts will at least let you know what to experiment with when trying to arrange flowers in a certain way so you know what to look for.

Using the right “canvas”

When painting a piece of art, the artist must paint on a canvas or a surface on which they can express themselves. For floral arrangements, the “canvas” is the place where you place your flowers. There are a few places you can do this, and depending on what type of “canvas” you use, you will end up with certain unique traits as well as some limitations.

Take, for example, the vase. Vases are the standard in many homes when it comes to keeping flowers indoors. Most people receive flowers that are already cut from the stem, meaning that it’s only a matter of time before they wilt. Still, you can give the flowers some water to keep them in good condition for a little while, and that’s where the vase comes in. Vases are great for small and few flowers, and they’re reusable, too, but you can only bunch up the flowers in a tight bundle.

On the other hand, you have what’s known as floral foam. It’s a type of foam that you can use to hold flowers in place, and you can also make the foam wet for it to hold moisture. This moisture feeds the flowers, so you can keep them living for a little longer. Floral foam lets you be a bit more creative when it comes to floral arrangements, but you need to be clever in hiding the foam as it can be a little unsightly for some people.
