Best plants for wet soil

By: Garden Gate staff
Stop struggling with wet areas. Grow these plants that love moisture!

Have a spot in your yard that never seems to dry out? There are a lot of perennials and shrubs that can tolerate and even prefer wet soil. They’ll dress up the area and can help prevent the soil from washing away. Here are several options that are cold-hardy to at least USDA zone 5:

  • Bee balm Monarda didyma (in photo)
  • Buttonbush Cephalanthus occidentalis
  • Cardinal flower Lobelia cardinalis
  • Inkberry Ilex glabra
  • New York ironweed Vernonia noveboracensis
  • Spicebush Lindera benzoin
  • Summersweet Clethra alnifolia
  • Sweet flag Acorus calamus
  • Virginia sweetspire Itea virginica
