Protection for hanging plants

By: Garden Gate staff
Try this simple tip to protect hanging basket plants during storms or strong wind.

Protection for hanging plants

In a storm or strong winds, the foliage inside your hanging baskets can whip against the chains.

To protect the fronds of ferns, in particular, from getting torn, use ½-inch-diameter clear plastic tubing found at the hardware store. Cut lengths to match each chain, slit the tubing and then wrap it around the metal links, just like you see in the photo.

This covering works well to cushion the chains, preventing damage to all types of leaves, branches and stems. And since it’s clear, it doesn’t distract from the plants inside.
