Space-saving shrub
This slender deutzia (Deutzia gracilis) is easy to forget about because you never have to do a thing with it! Then cascades of white flowers bloom each spring, reminding you of its presence. In fall, foliage turns burgundy.
‘Nikko’ is more compact than the species, growing only 1 to 2 feet tall. A great addition to the front of a mixed border, this shade-tolerant shrub eventually roots where stems touch the ground, making it an effective ground cover.
Though branches won’t require much pruning, you can cut back for size or tidiness right after blooms finish. This will ensure you don’t sacrifice any flowers next spring.
