Step 1: Cut off the top and bottom of a large aluminum can.
Step 2: Pound the can about 1 in. deep into your soil.
Step 3: Fill it with 1 in. of water, and let it drain completely.
Step 4: Fill to the 1-in. line once more, timing how long it takes for the water to disappear:
