Lindsay lives in the woods with her husband and daughter, where they share their garden with the birds and bears. An environmental scientist by training, Lindsay has been a biologist, flower farmer, florist, and writer. She is delighted to join the Garden Gate team!
Plants are amazingly resilient. I've planted shrubs too shallow, forgotten to get daffodil bulbs in the ground until nearly winter, and accidentally cut my clematis down to the ground. Don’t be afraid to make “mistakes” – things bounce back!
Little things can make gardening easier. I have hand trowels stashed all over the yard so I can plant or weed whenever the mood strikes.
Nobody mentions how much time you might need to spend getting rid of grass. Whether I'm starting a new bed or just trying to keep the lawn from creeping in, it feels like I'm constantly digging, edging, or smothering grass. It's my least favorite garden task.
Grow what you love. I wish I could say my garden has a cohesive style, but it's really just a colorful hodge podge of all my favorites. Currently, I’m loving baptisia, summersweet, cosmos, and just about every type of aster. I also have an annual tradition of trying to grow watermelon, which is a fun challenge in my very short zone 5 growing season.
