By: James A. Baggett James A. Baggett
Follow these easy steps to clean up hellebores in spring so they look their very best when they bloom!

Hellebores provide early spring blooms

Hellebores are gems in the early winter garden and are often some of the earliest perennials to bloom. These shade-loving plants last from February to March setting the stage for other spring-blooming flowers. Plants will then go dormant through the rest of the season and can accumulate some debris and can get lost if not cleaned up. To make sure they look their best when they bloom, follow these easy steps:

How to clean up hellebores in spring

  1. Clean up any fallen leaves and debris around the hellebores.
  2. Cut off tattered leaves using a pair of pruners. Their leaves are tough and you won’t be able to simply pull the tattered leaves off by hand. Be sure to wear a pair of garden gloves. Hellebore leaves can be rather tough with rough edges.
