Wild four o’clock Mirabilis nyctaginea
IDENTIFICATION — With its thick tuber and fibrous roots, this 4 1/2-ft.-tall weed towers along roadsides and other spots. Blooming with small pale pink to lavender flowers in summer, it spreads by means of seeds and roots.
FAVORITE CONDITIONS — Wild four o’clock prefers full sun to part shade and well-drained soil in areas that are not frequently cultivated.
CONTROL — Dig out the roots or use a herbicide when you see the flowers begin to form in late spring.
