Prevent soil compaction

By: Garden Gate staff
Use this tip to make sure your garden's soil is always at its best.

Prevent soil compaction

The structure of your soil impacts how plants get established — the more air particles present, the easier it is for roots to push through and water to reach deep.

There are a few things you can do to make sure your soil doesn’t get tightly packed. Spread wood mulch or compost wherever you step. This will reduce the depth of compaction as you walk. If you need to quickly pull a weed or clean out a plant, lay down scrap lumber, like the piece of old fence here, to distribute your weight over a larger area as you step inside your garden.
