Mineral deposits

IDENTIFICATION — Along with soil and light, water is one of those essential things that you need to grow plants. Ever notice the crusty formations that “grow” in your house plants’ soil? These are mineral deposits left from watering. They are often accompanied by yellowed leaves and browning leaf margins.

CONTROL — First, check the pot’s drainage. Make certain that water drains freely from the pot so any minerals that are in the water are flushed away. If the water drains slowly or not at all, your plant needs better drainage. If the pot drains well, try changing to a lightweight soil mix. Filtering your water before giving it to your plants will remove many of the minerals before they get to your plant. A countertop water filtering system, such as a Brita®, will work for this.
