Add continuous hot color all season with this long-blooming tender perennial.

Jolt dianthus

Jolt dianthus (Dianthus hybrid) will change the way you think about this cool-weather tender perennial. That’s because this series blooms early and keeps on going through the hottest parts of summer, even in the South.

Eye-catching Jolt Pink, in the photo at left, is an All-America Selections® bedding plant award winner. Darker red Jolt Cherry is available, too. Both are topped with clusters of heat-tolerant blooms on well-branched stems.

Topping out at 16 to 20 inches tall, this dianthus makes a great filler or thriller in a mixed container, depending on the size of your pot. If you plant it in the middle of a bed, add more compact plants in front to create a full, flowery look.

Count on Jolt to look great with summer favorites, like black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida) and bee balm (Monarda spp. and hybrids). And it will still be going strong when the asters (Symphyotrichum spp.) start a few months later.
