design with curved line
The lines used in the garden greatly impact the mood of the space. Line is created by the patterns of structures, hardscapes, planting beds and even the shapes and arrangements of the plants themselves. It guides the eye through the garden, speeding it up, slowing it down or causing it to linger. Curved lines set an informal mood and create pockets that are hidden from view, intriguing the visitor to wander around the corner. This illusion of extra space is great for smaller lots or gardens.
To design your garden lines, begin with a rough map of your property. Then sketch out spaces for different activities and how you want traffic to flow. Large, open spaces suggest gathering and rest. Once you have the spaces and traffic flow figured out, begin drawing lines; use curves of different sizes. When making curves of or in the lawn area, be sure the radius is big enough to easily maneuver your mower. A radius of about 36 inches will allow enough space for the mower to follow the curve. When you plant your garden, incorporate globe or mounded plant shapes to enhance the style.
