Looking for long-lasting color and flowers that will keep blooming late into the season? The plants in this container do a great job brushing off the chill. Depending on where you live, you might even be able to enjoy this combo from late summer into the new year. Just choose a potting mix with slow-release fertilizer and place in full sun or part shade to keep plants looking their best.

Container recipe
Dianthus flowers will freeze, but the plant stays hardy in USDA zones 6 or warmer. This leatherleaf sedge can survive to 0 degrees F and keeps growing if temps stay above that. But it’s also hardy in USDA zone 7 or warmer, so you can plant it in the ground or overwinter it in a pot in the garage.
One of the most cascading pansy cultivars available, Cool Wave™ White is also tolerant of frost. It will shrug off snow and even survive down to -20 degrees F. So it’s a great pansy to overwinter in the ground in USDA zones 5 to 9. Plant them in the fall for a great display and then enjoy them again come spring, as soon as it starts to warm up a bit. Just pinch off any brown stems and spent flowers for a fresh look.
