Buffet for birds

By: Garden Gate staff
Give birds lots of late-season energy with this simple tip.

Buffet for birds

Don’t just toss out seedheads after deadheading! Cuttings of spent flowers, such as coneflower (Echinacea spp. and hybrids), sunflower (Helianthus annuus), hollyhock (Alcea rosea) and sedum (Sedum spp. and hybrids) draw in birds with their dried seeds.

Tie these deadheaded trimmings into bundles using pieces of raffia or ribbon and hang them upside down from tree branches, like you see at left, or in other spots around the yard. Nuthatches, finches and other birds will enjoy the no-fuss feeder.
