American goldfinch Carduelis tristis

While some birds eat from a varied menu, the American goldfinch is chiefly a seed-eater. Niger seed offered in niger tube feeders is a surefire draw for this lively gold beauty. (Females are olive-green.) Millet and black oil sunflower seeds are also popular foods.

The goldfinch eats seeds from perennials, such as coneflower, annuals, such as cosmos, and even veggies, such as lettuce. And best of all? Dandelion and ragweed seeds, as well as those of other weeds, are special favorites!
