You can do a little research into what plants match the environment you can provide for them. Similarly, some plants suit living in a terrarium more than others if this is your preference.

Size

One of the most common complaints we found whilst doing our research is dissatisfaction with the size of online purchases of succulents. Most of the descriptions of these succulents come with an accurate size description. However, many of the photographs used make the succulents look larger than they are. To purchase a succulent in the size frame you want, buy from a physical store or follow the size description. Sometimes, it helps to have a tape measure ready to see the size of the product you are physically purchasing.

Number of succulents

Succulents are often available in sets. If you are unsure what kind of succulent you want, large sets with a good variety will allow you to find a few that you love. Large sets also increase the chances that you will receive some fully formed and intact plants and pots. If you buy too many succulents in a set, you can pot them and give them to people as gifts.

Types of Succulent

There are lots of different types of succulents that you may like to research.

Aeonium succulents include the kiwi, mardi gras, sunburst, zwartkop or black tree aeonium; giant velvet rose tree aeonium, and salad bowl. Aeonium succulents are often colorful plants with waxy, thick leaves that are similar to pinwheel rosettes.

Agave succulents include blue glow, black spined agave, artichoke agave, queen victoria agave or royal agave, and mangave bloodspot. Agaves have thick, tapered and rigid leaves. They mostly consist of plants that flower once then die (monocarpic); however, they usually produce many “babies” before these succulents die.”,

Aloe succulents include black beauty, Christmas carol, Doran black, Crosby’s prolific, hellskloof bells, short-leaved aloe, torch aloe, Buhr’s aloe, tiger tooth, cape, gold-tooth, and mitre or rubble aloe. Aloes are amazingly diverse in color and texture and can live for up to 100 years! You can also use these plants for medicinal purposes. However, we don’t recommend you attempt this without a lot of research first.

Crassula succulents include kitten, Tom thumb, springtime, and money tree. This genus contains hundreds of succulents - too many to list. They come in a wide variety of rosettes, colors, and sizes. Crassula is often full of leaves and looks quite “full.”

Euphorbia succulents look similar to cacti but are not. They include the milk barrel cactus, sticks on fire, and snowflakes. They usually produce small white or yellow flowers. You should be careful when handling these succulents as they produce a white sap that is a known irritant. 

Echeveria succulents include gorgon’s grotto, black prince, misty lilac, chenille plant, and pink granite. As you can probably tell by the names of these plants, echeveria often contains purple or pink tones. They are often used to make unique-looking wedding bouquets.

Gasteria succulents include green ice, little warty, and twilight zone.  Gasteria looks similar to aloe, except they are often covered in “warts” and bumps. 

Hawthornia is usually green and is often much smaller than other succulents. Some look similar to aloe, and some have windowed leaves. Hawthornia includes the star cactus, haworthia mutica, zebra plant, and haworthiopsis concolor. 

Graptopetalum hybrids include graptopetalum, graptosedum, graptophytum, and graptoveria. Most graptopetalum hybrids are made up of rosettes but have many different colors and traits. You might want to look into this type of succulent if you want purple, pink, or blue hues.

Mammillaria includes the lady thimble cactus and the thimble cactus. They often look hairy and produce vibrant flowers. 

Kalanchoe includes the mother of thousands, alligator plants, copper spoons, and the panda plant. Opt for a kalanchoe if you want something that looks a little alien. They possess beautiful bright flowers and are easy to propagate. However, they are considered toxic to pets and children.

Opuntia bears edible fruit - do some research into this before you eat any. They also have beautiful large flowers. They include Texas prickly pear, party favor, and pink frost. 

Sedum succulents include Coppertone sedum, burrito, and blue jelly beans. Sedum comes in a wide range of colors and shapes. In addition, they often possess many leaves. 

Sempervivum is perfect for cold weather. They will change to vibrant colors under extreme weather conditions. They include hotshot, jubilee, hedgehog, and jock.

Senecio succulents almost look like varieties of seaweed. Some of these succulents hang over the edge of the pot; others grow upwards like tigs. In addition, Senecio succulents include a string of bananas and blue chalksticks.

Succulent plants range in price depending on their size and species. For example, you can purchase some small cacti for as little as $10. However, if you are looking for something more impressive to sit in your garden or home, you can easily spend upwards of $100.
