Planting on the edge

Transform a wooden pallet into a charming planter with this simple modification.

Planting on the edge

Pallet projects are perfect for gardens! Bring color and blooms up to eye level when you stand a pallet upright and make it into a planter — with only minimal modifications!

Cut a double layer of landscape fabric to fit in between the pallet boards and attach it with heavy duty staples placed every few inches. Then fill the troughs with lightweight potting mix and add your favorite plants.

Trailing ground covers, such as perennial geranium (Geranium spp. and hybrids) and sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima) planted here, have shallow roots and will cascade over the edges of the board. Consider changing the color scheme from year to year with different flowers.
