Caged-out critters

Use this heavy-duty solution to protect your edibles from all types of animals.

Caged-out critters

Need a heavy-duty solution to protect your harvest from animals? Try the “cages” you see here.

With PVC pipe, PVC fittings and PVC glue, construct the framework, making each cage slightly larger than their raised beds, so it will fit on the edge of the bed. Wrap chicken wire around the PVC pipes and secure it in place with cable ties. Water can sometimes leak in and freeze and thaw during winter, so drill drainage holes along the bottom PVC pipes to prevent the plastic from cracking.

The PVC cages are lightweight enough that they’re easy to lift off the beds when it’s time to weed or harvest. Even without being anchored or weighed down in any way, the structures should stay firmly in place, withstanding high winds, all year long.
