Fire pit safety

By: Garden Gate staff
A fire pit lets you stay outdoors later into the evening and season. Don’t forget these safety tips and fire-resistant plants.

Fire pit safety

A fire pit makes a great addition to the backyard. To be safe, keep 7 feet surrounding the area clear of any plants, and avoid ornamental grasses and high-resin pines and other conifers because they’re prone to catching fire. Before enjoying a fire, inspect the area and remove any dead or dying plant material. While no plant is fire-proof, some are naturally slower to ignite if an ember does land on its foliage. Here are a few fire-resistant plants to use in a backyard with a fire pit:

• Bearded iris (Iris hybrids)
• Ice plant (Delosperma hybrids) (at left)
• Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
• Perennial geranium (Geranium spp. and hybrids)
• Sedum (Sedum spp. and hybrids)
