Dolce Brazen Raisin coral bells (Heuchera hybrid)
Hybridizing has resulted in countless coral bells to choose from. But deer-resistant Dolce® Brazen Raisin coral bells is an easy favorite! It’s not very large — growing to a low mound of 8 to 10 inches with blooms 18 to 24 inches tall — but it makes a big impact.
Look closely at left and you can see that the large, dark purple-black scalloped leaves have red-purple undersides. This hue deepens in some sun and makes a stunning combination with complementary color yellow-green. Its hot pink buds open pale-pink to white, like you see in the inset, on deep red scapes in spring to early summer.
Plant it in well-drained soil in part shade. If you live where the ground freezes in winter, cover coral bells with a 4-inch layer of mulch once the ground is frozen. This protects plants from cycles of thawing and freezing that can push them out of the ground, exposing the roots to harsh winter weather. Just pull back the mulch in early spring.
