Garden mum makeover
Don’t let your garden just fade away! Shorter days and cool temperatures mean many plants are slowing down, and late-season beds and borders often end up looking like the one at left—a little tired.
Garden mums (Chrysanthemum hybrids) are perfect for filling those blank holes, where annuals or vegetables grew during the summer. And you don’t have to plant a huge mass to get lots of impact. To see how a grouping of 8 garden mums transformed this pathway planting, just click on the photo and drag to the right.
Repeated along the walkway, they lead your eye back to the patio. Plus, the bronze and yellow flowers complement the red fall foliage of the oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia). For the longest season of blooms, look for plants that have buds just starting to show color. And because this is a short seasonal display, don’t worry about giving them the perfect growing spot. Just plant garden mums in the ground and water well for an easy, colorful end to fall.
Here are some supplies and tools we find essential in our everyday work in the garden. We may receive a commission from sales referred by our links; however, we have carefully selected these products for their usefulness and quality.
