
Grasshoppers be gone!
Insects and disease can really hit hard in summer — don’t let either one take over, especially when it comes to pesky grasshoppers. These insects, seen at left, destroy foliage. Find out what to look for and what you can do about it.

Symptoms Chewed leaves, stems and flowers start showing up in summer.
Solution Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) is a good choice but doesn’t work quickly. In the meantime, use a floating row cover to prevent damage. For a large infestation try a pesticide, such as Sevin®.
