Stunning standard
Thriller, filler, spiller — when it comes to designing beautiful containers, you hear about these elements all the time. But getting a thriller that’s tall enough to balance the size of your pot can be a challenge.
Looking for a quick, good-looking fix? Here, a steel post, or column, supports a basket. The post is screwed onto a base that comes up through the pot so stability is never a problem. You will need to assemble everything before you fill both containers, though. There are a couple of options with this look — let the plants in the basket cascade into the lower pot or keep them trimmed so the support shows.
This Pamela Crawford basket column is sold by Kinsman Company.

Container recipe
Give this combo a spot in full sun and, for the most flowers, fertilize weekly with a water-soluble bloom booster plant food. Be sure to check the upper container regularly for moisture, too. Since it’s smaller, it’ll dry out faster than the bottom container.
