Late winter
See the new flower stems peeking through the dead stuff here? Most of this debris is easy to pull away, but you might need to snip some tough stems with pruners.

Early spring
The early flowers here look much better without all the dead brown leaves around them. Stems start out upright and fall to the side as the growing season goes on.

Midspring
These flowers are done, so grab a handful of stems and cut them back to just above the crown. You’ll have to cut off most of the foliage in this process, but don’t worry. New, better-looking leaves will be along shortly.
