Which feeder fits?

By: Garden Gate staff
Find out the best way to get the most birds at your feeder.

Which feeder fits?

Bring birds to your yard and you’ll get hours of viewing pleasure in return! Start by deciding how much time and money you’re willing to invest.

GOOD Get a hopper feeder and a bag of mixed wild bird seed at your local home improvement or hardware store. But birds will kick or scratch out smaller seeds to get to their favorites.

BETTER Put black oil sunflower seeds, instead of mixed seed, in a hopper or a caged tube feeder that keeps larger birds and squirrels away. Black oil sunflower seeds have protein and fat that birds need to stay warm in winter.

BEST You’ll attract the widest variety of birds with a combination of different feeder types and seeds. We put hulled sunflowers in the hopper, niger seeds in the mesh feeder and black oil sunflower seeds in the caged tube feeder.
