Stop evergreen damage

By: Garden Gate staff
We give you a list of salt-tolerant evergreen varieties, so you can choose the best tree for you!

Stop evergreen damage

Noticing brown needles like this on your roadside evergreens? Once exposed to the salt-based mixtures used to treat wintry roads, these varieties are easily burned:

  • White pine (Pinus strobus)

  • False cypress (Chamaecyparis spp.)

  • Yew (Taxus spp.)

  • Canadian hemlock (Tsuga canadensis)

If this browning drives you crazy, here are three salt-tolerant varieties very hardy for cold, snowy areas:

  • Upright Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis)

  • Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana)

  • Colorado spruce (Picea pungens)
