protecting new divisions
Fall’s one of the best times to divide your pulmonaria or other perennials, so here’s a tip for helping the divisions survive. Pulmonaria really wilts after it’s divided, so cover newly planted divisions to help reduce transpiration, or loss of moisture, through the leaves.
After planting, soak the ground thoroughly and set a basket or box over the plant. If you’re using a cardboard box, poke several holes in the side for air circulation, especially on hot days. Leave the division covered, checking it occasionally until it fully revives. Be sure to keep the plant watered to encourage it to reestablish its roots. Some leaves may wither away completely. But don’t worry, the plant should be fine by next spring’s blooming time.
