Whitefly
IDENTIFICATION — Whiteflies feed on the foliage of several shrubs and trees (especially citrus) and most types of house plants or greenhouse-grown plants.?Because of their short month-long life cycle, whiteflies can multiply quickly during warm weather or any time on indoor plants. Larvae suck the sap from young leaves, which turn yellow and die. To check for whitefly, brush the foliage and watch for a white cloud rising from the plant. The 1?16- to 1?8-in. adults leave a sticky honeydew that promotes sooty mold. Whiteflies also transmit several plant viruses.
CONTROL — The photo shows both larvae and adults on the bottom of a leaf. Rub eggs and larvae off the undersides of leaves or blast them off with a strong jet of water. If that doesn’t work, spray all surfaces of plants with insecticidal soap once a week for several weeks to kill multiple generations of this pest.
