The shapes and sizes of leaves are referred to as texture — it’s a versatile and easy-to-use element, especially when it comes to creating contrast. Just click ahead to find out how texture works in this great-looking planting!

Bold texture
Plants with large leaves have bold, or coarse, texture that draws your attention. Even with all the rich color in this bed, you probably noticed the honeybush (Melianthis major) first because of its unusual, wide foliage, which acts as an excellent focal point.

Fine texture
Get tons of textural contrast when you pair a plant that has bold texture with one that has fine texture or small leaves. Fine-textured plants recede compared to those with larger leaves, creating attention-grabbing contrast — a big part of what makes a garden look so good.

Move the eye along
Clustering plants with similar texture at the front of the border makes it easy for the eye to focus on other dramatic textures in the bed. These mounds of small leaves give the eye an easy resting place, too.
