Sign of trouble?

By: Garden Gate staff
Are flower clusters like these a reason to worry about your tree?

Sign of trouble?

Flowers covering the branches and trunk of your redbud (Cercis canadensis), just like the one here? Extra blossoms and fruit can indicate stress, but they can also mean conditions are perfect for your tree this spring.

It can be normal for redbud to have flower clusters on large stems and the trunk, and if the tree seems healthy and there are no obvious causes for stress, such as drought or nearby construction, don’t worry. Redbuds are fairly short-lived trees, though, so if yours is nearing 25 years, it’s a good idea to plant a replacement. This way, it’ll reach a decent size before your older tree starts to decline.
