Prostrate knotweed Polygonum aviculare

IDENTIFICATION — Growing 1 to 2 in. tall and spreading 8 to 48 in. wide, prostrate knotweed forms mats from a central tap root. You’ll easily recognize this weed because it looks just like a green lace doily lying on the ground.

FAVORITE CONDITIONS — Compacted soil in full sun, especially along garden and lawn edges, is where you’ll find this weed.

CONTROL — Prostrate knotweed spreads by seeds, so the best controls are to pull or hoe, or use a selective herbicide.
