Help near black walnuts

Here are 6 evergreen options that make good black walnut partners.

Help near black walnuts

Having a hard time keeping evergreens going near black walnut (Juglans nigra) trees? You’re not alone. These trees produce juglone, a substance produced by all parts of this tree that some plants can’t tolerate. Sensitive plants are often stunted with wilted, yellow leaves and eventually die. Rhododendron (Rhododendron spp.), privet (Ligustrum japonicum) and yew (Taxus spp. and hybrids) are a few evergreen shrubs that can’t tolerate juglone. Here are six evergreen options that won’t be affected by nearby black walnuts:

  • Arborvitae Thuja spp. (in photo)
  • Eastern hemlock Tsuga canadensis
  • Eastern red cedar Juniperus virginiana
  • Juniper Juniperus spp.
  • Wintercreeper Euonymus fortunei
  • Yucca Yucca filamentosa
