There are a few things you can still tackle this fall — getting your lawn ready and gorgeous for next year is one of them. Here are three maintenance options: Good, better and best. If you only have a few minutes, go with the good option. More time? Go with the better or best to make sure your lawn is in shape and ready for spring.
GOOD?— Mow the lawn to chop and mulch dry leaves after they fall from the trees. Just let the fine particles disintegrate into the lawn.
BETTER —?After chopping leaves, rake the area with a rake that has flexible teeth to remove large particles. Then spread a fall lawn fertilizer. And if there’s a weed problem, apply a herbicide now.
BEST —?Rent a power dethatcher to take out the layer of spongy dead material that builds up near the surface of the lawn and can smother the grass. Once you’ve finished, overseed and then fertilize. Don’t apply a weed control if you’re spreading seed — it’ll prevent seeds from sprouting.
