from holiday wreath to plant support
If wind is a real problem in your garden, you know the value of good plant supports. But instead of spending money on stakes, save your cash and recycle your holiday wreath. Simply discard any wire or decorations first, then remove the greens to reveal the wire frame. (If you run the greens through a chipper, they make great compost.) Also keep your eye out for other wreaths put on the curb after the holidays for recycling.
In spring, lay the frames on the ground around young plants like Iceland poppies and peonies that need support later. Getting a head start prevents broken stems. As plants grow, add three or four bamboo or metal stakes as “legs” to the frame.
