Creative cover-up
You don’t always want to put a plain terra-cotta pot on display — especially if it’s cracked or showing its age.
Luckily, it’s easy to create unique, beautiful designs with a few affordable materials from craft and hobby or hardware stores. Here’s what we needed for our cover-up:
- Glue gun with all-purpose glue sticks
- Natural fiber or synthetic rope
- Scissors
- Anti-fraying liquid, such as Fray Check™

It’s a wrap
Get a look that has interesting contrast when you wind different types of rope around your pot. To add another rope, like in the photo at far left, cut both ends at an angle, for a close fit.
Working with the pot upside-down makes it easy to push each layer of coils together tightly, like in the photo at upper left. Use a hot glue gun to secure the rope at every quarter turn.
Apply an anti-fraying liquid to synthetic or natural fiber rope ends to prevent unraveling. Or use a flame to melt the ends of synthetic rope, like we did in the photo at lower left.
We used about 70 ft. of rope around this 15 in. in diameter and 8 in. tall pot.

Pot it up
Get started on this design and you’ll realize the possibilities are endless! But keep in mind that some cover-ups will last longer than others. Try extending material life under the protection of a covered patio or store pots inside at the end of the season.
