Worry-free feeding!

By: Garden Gate staff
It's never too early to plan ahead! We'll show you how to get perennials off to the best start in spring.

Worry-free feeding!

Give your perennials all the nutrients they’ll need come spring. Just follow these easy steps for applying compost now!

Pull mulch away from the base of each plant. Spread a 2-in.-thick layer of compost around the crown, just like we did using this scoop for neat application. Be careful not to get any in the crown, though, where it could cause breakage or freeze the roots and kill the plant.

This layer of compost begins feeding plants right away before it freezes in cold-winter areas. And as the compost thaws again in spring, the nutrients in this slow-acting soil amendment sink even farther down to the roots.
