Prevent critter damage

Find out how to make sure your spring bulbs reach their full potential.

Prevent critter damage

You may see lush foliage and fat buds one day, but the next, bulbs can look chewed down, like at left.

WHAT’S CAUSING THE PROBLEM? Deer gnaw off the top of the plant, and rabbits eat leaves, stems and flowers or just leave them lying around. Squirrels are mostly curious, snapping off flowers and letting them fall. Even birds searching for nesting material may “pick” flowers as they start to open.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Fencing that blocks the pest’s path, both above and below ground, can be effective but may distract from the blooms.

Repellents with an offensive taste or odor are a good alternative, such as granular or spray Repels-All®. Apply it according to the label as soon as you see foliage, and continue using until flowers finish.
