Brown hellebores

Most hellebores will maintain their green foliage through winter. Though they often come through a mild winter unscathed, you’re likely to see some leaf dieback in colder zones. The brown leaves like those in the photo are caused by cold, dry weather.

A severe winter in any zone, especially if there isn’t much snow cover, can also take a toll on hellebores. On the other hand, a blanket of snow gives plants moisture and protection from drying sun and winter wind. When the snow melts, leaves will come through fresh and green.

In late winter or early spring, remove any winter-burned leaves and debris. Your flowers will look their best and you’ll protect your plants from rot and diseases.
