Issue 52 Wheelbarrow Buddy

What it is — Small, hard-plastic wheels are attached to a 5/8-inch, galvanized steel axle that connects to the barrow's landing gear. This kit puts two additional wheels onto a single-wheel wheelbarrow.

What it does — Extra wheels let you drive your wheelbarrow like a baby stroller, pushing down on the handles and raising the front wheel to turn.

Wheelbarrow Buddy

How it works — When attached to a small, lightweight barrow, the wheels help smaller gardeners move bulky loads over smooth terrain. The operator doesn't need to lift the weight and can carry more in each trip. However, the small wheels don't move easily through gravel or soil.

Small-sized wheels also put the barrow's handles too low for comfortable use by taller operators.

Assembly is a two-person job. There are U-bolts, steel plates, nylon spacers and the axles to hold in position when you attach the wheels to the landing gear. So have a patient friend help you.

The Wheelbarrow Buddy is a good, low-cost idea that seems to need some more development to reach its full potential. But it is affordable enough to experiment with and see if it can do the job for you.

The Wheelbarrow Buddy is available at home improvement stores and some garden centers. Or contact the manufacturer at Contemporary Marketing and Design Group, Inc., 5594 N. Hollywood Ave., Suite 206, Milwaukee, WI 53217. 414-322-7494.
